About Louis Bryant

Since the announcement of COVID-19 in the Bay Area, my primary work of wedding, photojournalism for the Berkeley Times, event photography, and product photography have been tremendously impacted. Of the money I was anticipating to earn this quarter, I've lost about 80% of that projected income due to business and the public honoring the shelter in place mandate.

Artist Statement

I aim to tell visual truth by capturing humanity and its connection to each other, the surrounding environment, and our psyches. People of our world have their perceptions of one another, but I believe visual storytelling is one useful element to build a bridge of understanding. Empathy is an effective way to connect humanity and I want my photos to have the role of putting people in another's environment.

Although some of these photos are unrelated when it comes to geographic locations, the commonality I feel from the batch (which I also try to communicate through my work in general) is an in-frame connection/relationship. Some of the visible connections involve another subject in the frame, in other shots it is an object and in some cases, it is you the receiver/audience. In our current state of physical and social distancing, we have shifted our definition of connection and post COVID-19 life may resume without the traditional handshake or even hug. It's nice to reflect on our human connections albeit direct and indirect especially since we regard ourselves as a complex species with dynamic offerings to the world. It's also nice to recognize that even though I was blessed to visit so many unique places and meet wonderful people, the universal feelings expressed and felt through the images are the shared attributes that unite us as human beings.
