About Melissa Wang

I create large abstract paintings that explore nature, global migrations and human vulnerability. My families' transpacific journeys, their experiences in unfamiliar lands and recent political events inform my work. I spontaneously layer water and paint to simulate texture and depth, reflecting literal and figurative states of change. Bright, biomorphic shapes signify vulnerable bodies or landscapes, highlighting what's at stake. Ultimately, my works are meditations on humans and events seemingly out of their control - and one's agency in navigating an uncertain world.

My new daily practices include extensive sketching and meditation to help reboot the creative inspiration behind my latest series: The Word for World is Forest. Originally, my April residency (located in the Armstrong National Redwoods Park and now postponed) intended to focus on the intersection of planetary exploration and questions about sentience; I'm reconsidering this in the context of our human perceptions and relationships to crisis.
