About Broke Ass Stuart
Stuart Schuffman, AKA Broke-Ass Stuart is a hustler. He is a writer, a poet, (insert the rest of Beastie Boys lyric here if you like) a TV Host, a publisher, and a former San Francisco Mayoral candidate. Like many creatives in the Bay Area, Stuart juggles a lot of projects to keep a roof over his head. He and his creative machine have been hit particularly hard by the Corona pandemic.
Stuart was born in the post “high-water-mark” era that Hunter S. Thompson spoke of in his infamous novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. 1980, the same year that John Lennon was shot and killed in New York. The world has hummed along since then. Life has slowly risen upward on the graph of corporate influence and authoritarian rule. That fact never sat well with Stuart.
In 2015, fed up with incumbent Ed Lee’s corporate ties, Stuart announced he was running for Mayor of San Francisco as an independent progressive. “Somebody has to do it,” he said.
Later in the campaign, Stuart would be quoted as saying, “I don’t actually want to be in politics. I feel like I’m better served by instigating and agitating on the sidelines. Because if you win, you have to be mayor. And that sounds terrible.”
You can read more about Stuart and the mayoral race here.
Stuart is the publisher and “Editor in Cheap" of the popular arts, culture, and events website BrokeAssStuart.com. The site has a punk-flavored literary zine feel to it which we find refreshing! His weekly column, Broke-Ass City, appears each Thursday in the San Francisco Examiner and he has been featured in has been featured in Lonely Planet, Conde Nast Traveler, and The Bold Italic. You can support Stuart’s efforts monthly at Patreon. He will also send you some of these lovely photos we have on display as postcards if you join! Please show this quintessential Bay Area creative some love!
