About Andrew Ogus
I make drawings on prepared printmaking paper, combining my fascinations with animals and the male figure. Rather than create an idealized perfection I am looking for the extraordinary beauty in ordinary people.
There are various themes. I follow the tradition of rendering human models as gods and heroes of the ancient and common era mythologies that still resonate today, rendered in same sex images. "The Postcard Project" combines modern models with figures in personal photographic postcards from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. "Fragments" are small drawings that perhaps suggest something larger.
As well as exploring the effects of different surfaces on the papers, these subjects are a conduit for exploring many kinds of marks, and how a simple variation in a line or a tiny stroke can transform an image.
I am a member of the cooperative City Art Gallery. My work has won an award from the Tom of Finland Foundation, and appeared in various publications.
